Teen Parent Initiative

A teen pregnancy carries with it a multitude of mixed emotions. Teen parents may feel afraid, alone, judged, confused, and perhaps even joyful and optimistic.

Teen parents face a unique set of challenges due to financial constraints, educational demands, and social stigma, all of which can have a lifelong impact.

In many situations, soon-to-be young mothers and fathers do not have the support of their families. In order to bring a healthy new life into this world and raise the child to become a happy, confident part of the community, support is crucial.

Shelby Jane Seyburn understood the need for this support and worked toward empowering these youths. In fact, she established the Teen Parent Initiative within the Oakland University Psychology Department, and one of the SJS Foundation’s missions is to support this program and teen parents.

There is nothing as powerful as a mother’s love, and nothing as healing as a child’s soul.

The initiative is a psychoeducational program that helps teen parents in local communities connect with each others, school staff, and the research team to assist them in their life challenges by educating the on a variety of topics, including:

  • The importance of a healthy diet and nutrition
  • Appropriate physical exercise
  • The many resources and social support opportunities available for teen parents

As Michigan’s source for compassion and support through hardships, the Shelby Jane Seyburn Foundation is proud to be there for pregnant girls and soon-to-be teen fathers who need help.

You’re not alone. We’re here for you.
